Why Mushrooms Develop Caps and Stems

Mushrooms develop specific structures to assist with reproduction.

Two of the most recognizable parts are the cap and the stem.

Purpose of the Cap

The cap protects the reproductive surface of the mushroom.

Underneath the cap are structures called gills or pores.

These surfaces release spores.

Role of the Stem

The stem elevates the cap above the ground.

By lifting the cap higher, the mushroom improves the ability of spores to disperse through the air.

Spore Release

Spores fall from the gills beneath the cap.

Air movement helps spread the spores across the surrounding environment.
